WEEKLY MATH UPDATES
Our main focus is still connecting with students, getting to know each other, and learning how to use the technology that will facilitate our learning. We know there will still be challenges, glitches, and frustrations this week. That’s okay! We will be forgiving, patient, and flexible and hope you will do the same. For immediate tech help try the CPS Online Reopening Guide support page.
7th and 8th grade will continue analyzing our study of integers (positive and negative numbers and zero!) We will continue to learn the rules and practice with multiplying and dividing integers--quiz Friday! The pattern to remember in multiplication and division is same sign is positive and opposite signs is negative.
- 7.NS.A.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
- 7.NS.A.2.aUnderstand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as -1*-1=1and the rules for multiplying signed numbers.
7th and 8th grade will continue to look into managing our shops and explore the markup and down for our marketing strategy. We will review tip, tax, and multiple ways of finding tax and cost. We also continue to represent the rate of change in a linear relationship in graph, table, or equation form. Students will have a performance task to show their understanding of this on Thursday.
- 8.EE.BUnderstand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
Students will continue to use Mathantics and IXL Math for individual/asynchronous learning.
Pre-ALGEBRA
We have begun to study independent and dependent variables, tables, and graphs. This week will look at what makes a line graph relationship, the vertical line and horizontal line, origin, and other graphs.
Also be on the lookout for emails updating what could be daily changes to the algebra schedule. I thank students and families for being patient and flexible with me as we all navigate the CPS reopening plan for Ray. We will keep our algebra time at 3:30 until hybrid learning begins on March 8.
7th and 8th study of figurative language and beginning examining Gary Soto's The Jacket. Quizlet and Vocabulary.com will assist. Individual goals will be assigned for IXL ELA and Writing. Asynchronous learning is going to be very important the second half of the week. We are entrusting our students will self-directed learning. Grades can be found on student and parent portal.
