- Celebrate Black History Month with Ray and the Ray PTO: To celebrate Week 4 of Black History Month, Ray PTO invites Ray families to submit a favorite recipe that celebrates African American heritage to LaWanda May ([email protected]) by Wednesday, February 24. If you like, you could include a line or two about the person you got the recipe from, if it is a family recipe. LaWanda will compile the recipes and share them with the community at the end of the month.

WEEKLY MATH UPDATES
Our main focus is on how we can run a business from a business operations, budget, and a daily to weekly profit. We have been working on learning a new method of finding our total cost by converting our percentage to a whole number or decimal and adding 1 then multiplying that by our cost. The concept of tip is part of independent practice.
Weekly ELA/Writing
This month is Black History Month and we have decided to interview two prominent black business owners: Jaqueline Jackson of Kilwins of Hyde Park and Erik Nance who owns Litehouse, Mikkey Retro Grill, Can't Believe it's Not Meat, and Soul Shack. These two professionals did an interview in our virtual classroom. It was so enlightening and inspiring. Our project consists of each scholar writing an introduction paragraph and develeping two slides that focus on the theme of "Paying it Forward" and the message they are sending to our community.
We are so proud of our students that all rose to the ocassion in their research, development, and presentation of their subjects.
7th grade We will continue analyzing our collected bird data from the Great Backyard Bird Count. Also-we will continue to study integers (positive and negative numbers and zero!) Quiz Monday on adding and “subtracting” integers. Then we will learn the rules and practice with multiplying and dividing integers.
- 7.NS.A.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
- 7.NS.A.2.aUnderstand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as -1*-1=1and the rules for multiplying signed numbers.
8th grade We will continue analyzing our collected bird data from the Great Backyard Bird Count. Also, we spent last week really trying to understand the ideas of: rate or change, slope, and linear relationship. This week we will practice with these concepts so that students can represent the rate of change in a linear relationship in graph, table, or equation form.
- 8.EE.BUnderstand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
Students will continue to use IXL-Math and English Language Arts for individual/asynchronous learning.
Also be on the lookout for emails updating what could be daily changes to the algebra schedule. I thank students and families for being patient and flexible with me as we all navigate the CPS reopening plan for Ray. We will keep our algebra time at 3:30 until hybrid learning begins.

Math Class Information
- STUDENT EMAIL: Students and families must be able to access their student’s email. Need help or logging in for the first time: Go Here. The student CPS email is the access to Google Classroom for assignments and information, to Google Meet to attend class remotely, and to Aspen Student Portal for grades.
- Weekly Individual/Asynchronous Assignments: Khan Academy--this week we have 3 exercises. Due each Friday by 11:59 p.m. Check Google Classroom for this and for other weekly assignments. 7th grade has Great Backyard Bird COunt data to analyze and 8th grade has a Desmos of Slope, Vertical Intercept, and Graphs.
- Google Classroom Links: Currently Google Classrooms are being pushed out to students through the CPS Aspen system as they enroll. Students and families can use the student’s CPS email to access their Google Classrooms.
- Supplies List
- Curriculum and unit overviews: Open-Up-- This is the launch page. Choose your role as parent and 7th or 8th grade to see an overview of every unit and lesson for the whole year.
- Grades: Starting September 8, 2020 CPS will return to regular grading practices, as the district will ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed. Grading scale.
- Office Hours: School days from 2:10 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. We will use this time to connect with students and families. We will have scheduled appointments as well as open times. We will use Google JamBoard and Google Hangouts Chat for one-on-one meetings. We will also schedule some small group sessions and meet using Google Meet. We are also available to talk with parents via email, Google Meet, or a telephone conversation. Please contact Mr. Florell @ [email protected] to schedule a conference time.
- Communication platforms with students: Google Classroom, CPS email, Google Meet (whole class), Google Chat, and Google JamBoard.

WEEKLY MATH UPDATES
Our main focus is still connecting with students, getting to know each other, and learning how to use the technology that will facilitate our learning. We know there will still be challenges, glitches, and frustrations this week. That’s okay! We will be forgiving, patient, and flexible and hope you will do the same. 7th grade Students should have bird-watched and made their counts for Great Backyard Bird Count between Feb 12 and Feb 15. I made several counts and saw some amazing birds! I am excited to hear about the students’ experiences! We will start sharing and analyzing our collected bird data on Tuesday, 2-16-21.
